Duangphet Phromthep was born on October 21, 2005 in Mae Sai, Thailand. He attended Mae Sai Prasitsart School and was a student of the sixth grade.
On June 23, 2018, Duangphet and 11 other boys between the age of 11-16 formed the Wild Boars soccer team and entered Tham Luang Nang Non cave, located near the border with Myanmar. Unfortunately, they got trapped due to heavy rains flooding the cave. A massive effort soon ensued to rescue the boys, with help coming from all over the world. After 18 days, the team of 12 boys was safely recovered with the assistance of divers. Upon their return, they were kept in quarantine at Chiangrai Prachanukroh Hospital due to their vulnerability to infection.
The rescue mission gained international attention and was celebrated around the world. Phromthep became known as "the smiling boy" for his cheerful demeanor in the hospital. He received a lot of fame for his courage and bravery during the mission, and was praised for his resilience and strength.
On February 17, 2023, a memorial ceremony was held for Duangphet Phromthep in his home village where hundreds of people gathered to pay respect and remember his life.
Duangphet Phromthep will be remembered forever as a young hero who courageously endured the cave rescue mission and won the hearts of the Thai people and the world. He left a lasting legacy of bravery and resilience, and his spirit and courage will never be forgotten.
