Born Anna Mae Bullock in Nutbush, Tennessee, Turner had an early start in music. She began singing in church as a young girl and was soon performing with her family in local clubs. In 1956, she met Ike Turner, who was a successful musician and producer. The two married soon after and formed the duo Ike & Tina Turner.
The duo quickly rose to fame, becoming one of the most popular acts in the country. They released their first hit single, "A Fool in Love," in 1960 and followed it up with several more hits. Their live shows were renowned for their energy and intensity, and they toured extensively throughout the 1960s and 1970s.
In 1976, Turner left Ike and embarked on a solo career. Her debut album, Private Dancer, was released in 1984 and was a huge success, selling millions of copies and earning her multiple Grammy Awards. She continued to tour and record music until 2009, when she retired from music.
