Steven Scott Harwell, ‘All Star’ singer for the American rock band Smash Mouth, was born on January 9, 1967 in Santa Cruz, California. As a young child, Steve was said to have displayed an undeniable talent for both singing and songwriting. He grew up under the creative influence of his parents, who both worked as members of the music industry, and developed an early passion for music that stayed with him throughout his life.
In 1994, Steve founded the rock band Smash Mouth, alongside childhood friend Greg Camp. After months of hard work, the group released their debut album Fush Yu Mang to critical and commercial success. It included their first breakout single, the now iconic 'Walkin' On The Sun', which went on to become one of the most played songs of the 1990s.
The group followed their debut album with Astro Lounge in 1999, earning even greater success thanks to their smash hit single 'All Star'. The track's popularity was further strengthened by its inclusion in the Shrek movie series, making it possibly the most recognized Smash Mouth song ever. The group is also known for their covers of several classic Motown tracks, including 'I'm A Believer' and 'Why Can't We Be Friends?'.
After two decades of working together, Smash Mouth disbanded in 2020. Though unable to continue performing with the group, Steve used his newfound free time to open a rock-themed restaurant in his hometown of Santa Cruz. He also worked in collaboration with the band Sugar Ray to create a new band, called Smash Ray, which played several shows in California before the pandemic struck.
Steve Harwell leaves behind a legacy as one of the most beloved singers of all time. From the '90s onwards, his voice became inseparable from the music of Smash Mouth, and his songs will continue to entertain and inspire music lovers for generations to come.
