James William Buffett was born on December 25, 1946 in Pascagoula, Mississippi. He was raised in Mobile, Alabama, where he attended McGill Institute for Boys and later graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi. He began his musical career in Nashville, Tennessee in the late 1960s, where he recorded his first album, Down to Earth, in 1970.
Over the next decade, Buffett released a string of albums that would become classics, including A White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean (1973), Living and Dying in 3/4 Time (1974), A1A (1974), and Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes (1977). His biggest hit, “Margaritaville”, was released in 1977 and quickly became an anthem for beach-goers everywhere. It reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and remains one of the most popular songs of all time.
In the 1980s, Buffett released a string of successful albums, including Coconut Telegraph (1981), One Particular Harbour (1983), and Last Mango in Paris (1985). He also began to diversify his career, appearing in films such as Hook (1991) and Congo (1995). In 2003, he released his first novel, Where Is Joe Merchant?, which was followed by several more books.
