O'Connor was best known for her 1990 hit single “Nothing Compares 2 U”, a cover of a Prince song. She was also known for her passionate activism and outspokenness.

Early Life and Career Beginnings

Sinéad Marie Bernadette O'Connor was born in Dublin, Ireland on December 8, 1966. She was the youngest of five children. O'Connor's mother died when she was just eight years old, and she was sent to live with her father and his new wife. As a teenager, she attended Catholic school and developed an interest in music.

At the age of 18, O'Connor moved to London and began pursuing her musical career. She released her debut album, The Lion and the Cobra, in 1987. The album was well-received by critics, and it established O'Connor as an important voice in the music industry.

Rise to Fame and Musical Success

In 1990, O'Connor released her most successful single, “Nothing Compares 2 U”. The song was a cover of a Prince song, and it became a global hit. It topped the charts in the United States, the United Kingdom, and many other countries. The song earned O'Connor two Grammy nominations and cemented her status as a star.

O'Connor went on to release several more albums throughout the 1990s and 2000s. She also collaborated with other artists, including U2, Peter Gabriel, and Sinead Lohan. Her music was praised for its emotional depth and unique sound.

Activism and Later Years

In addition to her musical career, O'Connor was an outspoken activist. She was an advocate for women's rights, LGBT rights, and animal rights. She was also an outspoken critic of the Catholic Church, and she famously ripped up a picture of Pope John Paul II during a live performance on Saturday Night Live in 1992.

In recent years, O'Connor had struggled with mental health issues. In 2022, her son Shane committed suicide at the age of 17. This tragedy had a profound effect on O'Connor, and she continued to struggle with depression and anxiety in the years leading up to her death.
