James Joseph Gandolfini Jr. was born in Westwood, New Jersey on September 18, 1961. He attended Park Ridge High School and later Rutgers University, where he earned a degree in communications. After college, he began his career as an actor, appearing in Broadway productions and small roles in films such as True Romance and Get Shorty.
In 1999, Gandolfini was cast as Tony Soprano in HBO's The Sopranos, a role that would define his career. The show was a massive success, garnering critical acclaim and numerous awards, including three Emmy Awards for Gandolfini himself. His portrayal of Tony Soprano as a conflicted mob boss struggling with his own inner demons resonated with audiences around the world, and he became one of the most recognizable actors of his generation.
