Barry Newman, an actor best known for his roles in the films Vanishing Point and Petrocelli, has died at the age of 92. His cause of death is unknown, though he was diagnosed with vocal cancer in 2009.

Born in Boston, Massachusetts, on November 7, 1930, Newman was raised in a Jewish family. He attended Brandeis University and graduated with a degree in theater. After college, Newman moved to New York City and began his acting career, appearing in numerous Broadway productions.

In 1966, Newman made his film debut in the comedy The Slender Thread. He then went on to star in the cult classic Vanishing Point, where he played Kowalski, a Vietnam veteran who goes on a cross-country race to evade the police. His performance earned him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor.

Newman's other notable roles include the title character in the legal drama Petrocelli, which ran from 1974 to 1976, and the lead role in the 1975 comedy The Stepford Wives. He also appeared in the films Airport 1975, The Last Tycoon, and The Outside Man.

On television, Newman was a regular on the NBC series The Name of the Game from 1968 to 1971. He also guest-starred on shows such as Hawaii Five-O, The Streets of San Francisco, and The Rockford Files.

Newman was married twice and had three children. He is survived by his children and grandchildren.
