George Maharis, a beloved actor and icon of the 1960s television series Route 66, passed away on Wednesday, May 24th, 2023 at the age of 94. He was best known for his role as Buz Murdock in the classic show, which ran from 1960 to 1964.

Early Life and Career

Maharis was born in Astoria, Queens, New York City, on September 1st, 1928. He attended the Professional Children's School in Manhattan and then went on to study acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. After graduating, he made his Broadway debut in the 1952 production of “The Rose Tattoo”.

Maharis' big break came in 1959 when he was cast in the role of Buz Murdock in the hit television series Route 66. His character was a young man who, along with his friend Tod Stiles (Martin Milner), traveled across the United States in a Corvette. The show was a huge success and Maharis became an overnight star.

Later Career and Personal Life

After Route 66 ended, Maharis continued to act in television and film. He appeared in shows such as The Mod Squad, The Name of the Game, and The Streets of San Francisco. He also had roles in several films, including The Satan Bug and The Happening.

In addition to his acting career, Maharis was an accomplished painter and sculptor. He had several art exhibitions throughout his lifetime.

Maharis was married twice, first to actress Marjorie Steele, and then to actress and singer Sally Gracie. He is survived by his son, George Maharis Jr., and his daughter, Christina Maharis.

George Maharis will be remembered as a talented actor and artist who touched the lives of many. He will be greatly missed.
