Houston rapper Big Pokey, also known as Milton Powell, passed away on June 18th, 2023 at the age of 48, leaving behind a legacy of successful albums and an influence on the Houston rap scene.

Big Pokey, born Milton Powell, was born in Houston, Texas on April 15th, 1976. He was raised in the South Park neighborhood of Houston, where he developed a love of rap music from an early age. He began rapping at the age of 14 and went on to become one of the most successful rappers in Houston. He released his debut album, "The Biggest Boss," in 1997 and it quickly became a local hit. He went on to release several more albums throughout his career, including "Hardest Pit in the Litter" (1999), "Da Sky's da Limit" (2001), and "Still Holdin' It Down" (2003). He was also featured on many songs by other Houston-based rappers, including Slim Thug, Paul Wall, and Z-Ro.
Big Pokey was a beloved figure in the Houston rap scene and was widely respected for his lyrical ability and flow. He was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2003 for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for his collaboration with Paul Wall and Chamillionaire on the song "Still Tippin'." He was also nominated for a BET Award in 2004 for Best Collaboration for his work on the song "My Life." Big Pokey's influence on the Houston rap scene is still felt today, and his legacy will live on through his music.
A memorial service for Big Pokey will be held on June 26th, 2021 at the South Park Baptist Church in Houston, Texas. All are welcome to attend.
