Born as Estelle Eggleston in Yazoo City, Mississippi, Stevens' life story was one of hard work and determination. She was raised primarily by her grandmother and quickly gravitated to the spotlight, starting out as a beauty pageant contestant in the 1940s and 1950s; she won Miss New Orleans in 1959. In 1960, she moved to Los Angeles and began carving out a career as a model. She appeared in Playboy magazine in 1960 and landed her first film role the same year.
With her beauty and talent, Stevens quickly rose to become one of the most sought-after actresses of the 1960s and 1970s. She starred in numerous television shows and movies, such as The Nutty Professor with Jerry Lewis and The Poseidon Adventure with Gene Hackman. She also starred in the show The Love Boat and had recurring roles in many popular shows, including Falcon Crest and Melrose Place. Her performance as “Lilo” in the 1962 movie Girls!Girls!Girls!, yielded a Golden Globe nomination.
Stevens was married three times throughout her life and had two children. She continued acting until the late 1980s, when she stepped away from acting and instead focused on writing, producing, and costume design.
She died in her home in Los Angeles on Friday, February 17th, 2023 at the age of 84 after a battle with Alzheimer's disease. She leaves behind a legacy of determination and hard work, and we are deeply saddened by her loss.
