Richard Belzer, a comedy star who made an everlasting impact on television with appearances on numerous shows, passed away peacefully in his home in France on February 19 at the age of 78. He was best known for his smart-ass comedic wit and for playing detective John Munch across multiple series, making him a beloved fixture in many people's lives.


Born to a Jewish family in Bridgeport, Connecticut, Belzer grew up in a musical home and graduated from Andrew Warde High School in Fairfield. He then discovered stand-up comedy and theater, and moved to New York at the age of 18 to pursue his dreams of becoming a comedian and an actor. He became a regular at The Improv, then one of the main stand-up comedy spots in the city.


He gained movie fame with roles in "Scarface" and "The Groove Tube," but it was his long-standing role as Detective John Munch on "Homicide: Life on the Street," that won him over 20 million viewers during its seven season run. It carried over to "Law & Order: SVU," where he appeared in over 200 episodes, making his portrayal of Munch a cultural icon. His acting talent also crossed over to other shows, including several appearances on "Late Night with Conan O'Brien," "The X Files," and "30 Rock." He was nominated for four Emmy Awards throughout his career.


Besides his acting career, Belzer wrote several books, including "New York Times" bestsellers such as "I Am Not a Cop!" He also wrote plays and hosted a radio show, "The Richard Belzer Show" on WBAI. Additionally, he was a vocal political activist and crusader for human rights, speaking out against injustices whenever possible.


Along with being a caring husband to wife Harlee McBride and father to daughter Sofia, Belzer was a great friend to many in the industry, including Paul Reiser and Jon Stewart. He will be deeply missed by fans and colleagues alike. Belzer had built a legacy on laughter and entertainment; a legacy that will live on for years to come.
